September 2016 Meeting - High River - Chinook Fabrics

It was a perfect day for a drive out to High River from Calgary.  And I got to go with Rhoni in her snazzy little sports car - topless - as she would say!  :)

As usual, we had a fun and informative meeting.  I do have one suggestion, which is to fire the photographer (me!).  My camera was not in the "auto" mode that I usually use and I didn't notice it. So of all the pix I took, not that many are usable.  I'll try again next month.  I'll post a few that aren't too bad with apologies for the quality in advance.

First - a big THANK YOU to Lucie at Chinook Fabrics for allowing to have our meeting in her store.  It is a very nice store so worth checking out on your next shop hop if you haven't been there.

About 23 three people were in attendance at the meeting - we occupied all the chairs provided!

Above - Lee's quilt - a gift for her daughter's grad - a Sew Kind of Wonderful Quick Curve Ruler Pattern - Urban.

Above: Lee in the background, Bev up front.

Above: Sharon, below, Lorna

Above: Patti, below, Bernice.

Above, my quilt (Mary).  This is the "Nine Patch Curves Quilt" in a book titled A Quilter's Mixology by Angela Pingle.  I found this blog post about the book.  Also I did a "step by step" blog post on how I quilted this quilt.

Sorry - need some help with the names here....

Above and below: Charmaine showing off her Victoria's Quilts - done using "freehand spirals, loops, leaves, feathers and whatever designs all over".

Above: Tanya

Above: Kelly, and two Colleens!

Above: Tanya showing her prize winning quilt!

Above:  this is Michelle's Bali Met Sochi - she pieced this with friends.  It's put together in two sections and quilted separately.  The two sections will be mounted in her church.

Above: Rhoni and Deb - these two ladies have fun!

Michelle gave a demo on how to make a table runner using a long-arm only (that is, no "regular" sewing machine required).  Check out the tutorial page for instructions.

In addition to Tanya's prize winning quilt, Janet noted that two of her quilts also won ribbons at local quilt shows over the summer.  Way to go ladies!!!!

In other business:

Fish Creek Library Quilt Show

Vanecea  is doing the leg work to organize a quilt show at the Fish Creek Library from Nov 4 to Nov 25.  She needs 8 volunteers to set up on Nov 4 and take down on Nov 25.  Please contact her if you are able to assist with the show.

If you are providing a quilt for the show, be absolutely sure to label it!!!  The quilts do not need to have a sleeve - however, as they are hung using safety pins so you must be comfortable with that.  Also, as this is a public venue, it is possible that your quilt may be touched, although Vanecea reports that most people are very respectful of the quilts and this has not been a problem in the past.

Deb (Loopy D's)  volunteered to act as a collection point if you would like to put a quilt into the show, but are unable to get it to the library on Nov 4 or pick up on Nov 25 - get it to her before Nov 4 and/or pick it up from her after the show.

It is permissible to attach some info about your business or your business card if you would like to promote your business.

Also - please let your quilt guilds know of the show - perhaps guild members would be interested in attending.

Upcoming Meetings

Next meeting is at Wonderfil Thread Centre on Oct 11/16.  Deb (Loopy D's) is going to demo ruler work so it will be a good one to attend!  Bring your favourite ruler.

The Nov 8 meeting is at My Sewing Room in Calgary.  Janet is going to ask the store if we can use their long-arm machines for a demo.  Come prepared to demo your favourite "all over" freehand design.  It would also be nice if you could bring a 20" square that is quilted with your fav design as a show and tell to be passed around.

Lee is going to check with Gail at Erie Quilt Art to see when a good month would be for a meeting there.  This might be a good place to have Cheryl Arkison as a guest.  Cheryl is a modern quilter and quilt judge.  She is a published quilt book author (e.g., Sunday Morning Quilts), has a fabric line and specializes in "improv" quilting.  This is Cheryl's business so there would be a charge to have her speak, which will be shared by those in attendance.

Deb (Loopy D's) has also volunteered to demo how to design and mark a wholecloth quilt - perhaps at the Rumpled Quilt Skins meeting.  That date is yet to be confirmed.   Bring stencils and a wholecloth quilt if you have one.

Miscellaneous

Questions/comments from the floor....

Problems with thread shred on batiks - make sure the fabric is not too tight on the frame, try a bigger needle, try Glide thread, try starch on the quilt top (Sta-Flo from Wal-Mart in US is recommended).

Allison is maintaining the membership contact list.

Charmaine is doing notes (and she does a fabulous job - Charmaine, you simply cannot quit!)

Rhoni is purging in prep for a move back to her home and native land of New Zealand.  She offered some items for "free".

Mary had 4 straight rulers - $15 each - still has three so if you're interested, let her know.

Janet suggested doing a survey re pricing and services offered.  Lee offered to send out a Survey Monkey survey - so watch for that.

Linda has some yarn for charity.

That's it for now!  Happy Quilting!!!!!

  2. Thanks Mary. Your photos combined with Charmaines notes is fabulous.

The Quilt show will run to November 25 though--that might be worth changing in the body of the post.
