Our April meeting was held at Rumpled Quilt Skins in Okotoks. They have a great meeting space and a very nice store, too! We are very grateful to the businesses that host us from month to month.
Business first:
- The Heritage Park Festival of Quilts is coming up soon. If you are participating in the group display of Hunter Star quilts, meet Charmaine at 10 am at the Railway Cafe at Heritage Park (it's right by the HP entry gate) on May 23 with your quilt - or bring them to the May 9 meeting or make arrangements to get it to Charmaine before that date. For next year's HP group entry the idea of using the same fabric/pattern so that the difference in quilting styles is showcased was discussed.
- CQA - Linda is on the Canadian Quilters' Association board. She let us know they are planning future conferences and are looking at Calgary for 2020. She is "reaching out" (in the old days we used to say "contacting" 😎) Calgary quilt guilds to asses interest in volunteering to help run the conference if one is held here. There are long-term and short-term volunteer opportunities. Our group expressed significant interest, particularly in the short-term positions. More to come on this.
Show and Tell!
Mary showed a fast, easy quilt - it's a panel with a pieced border of square-in-square blocks. She gifted it to the relatives they stayed with over Easter.
Mary again - this time with her Hunter Star entry for the group submission to Heritage Park.
Another Hunter Star for HP - who is the quilter? Please let me know and I'll add her name. Thx.
Karen's Civil War quilt.
Lee showed us two quilts pieced by Gail, quilted by Lee. Above, Broken Herringbone and below, Metro Rings.
Charmaine's version of the Violet Craft Elephant Abstractions quilt!
Allison's Hunter Star. She's calling it Fiesta Fruit Cocktail. I'd say we're going to have a fabulous group display with all these Hunter Star quilts!!!!
Karen's block of the month from "long ago" - and far, far away? OK - maybe not.
This one is pieced by Karen's Mom, quilted by Karen and will be gifted to Karen's sister. Lucky sister!
Linda showed us this Tula Pink butterfly quilt made by her sister in non-Tula Pink fabrics. It's fabulous if I do say so myself!!!!
Joanne - a rooster. Much discussion about the design originating from an "adult colouring book". Personally, I love those books and have a stack of them - they are great for quilting ideas.
And our resident genius - Vanecea. This quilt has one billion pieces in it - each finished to 1/2 inch. They say there is a fine line between insanity and genius. Just sayin"....
Topic of the Day: Wholecloth Quilts
(Please take a look at the minutes for discussion details.)
Janet started off the discussion with a couple of her examples - small (above) and large (below).
Close up.
She showed how she marked using blue water soluble marker.
Charmaine showed a wholecloth she did starting with an IKEA print. Very effective.
Above and below are Allison's wholecloth. She put it in last year's HP group display.
Tracy's.
Above and below - Jane's.
Vanecea showed us a pre-marked panel she picked up - it's all marked and ready to quilt if you want something to practice quilting on but don't necessarily care if your design is "original".
And another Vanecea example - all quilted this time.
And below - Vanecea's amazing creation featuring some painting, bling and metallic thread.
I (Mary) showed my dragon wholecloth but there is no pix of it from the meeting. If you're interested in it, check out my blog post here.
There are lots of tips and good ideas in Charmaine's meeting notes - I won't repeat them here.
Next meeting is May 9 @ Addies in Cochrane. Linda is going to talk about judging quilts at shows - it sounds like a "do not miss" meeting!
Red/Gold hunter star for HP is quilted and pieced by Sharon MacDonald
